What It Does
A trace mineral that works hand-in-hand with vitamin E as the body's antioxidant defense system. Selenium activates glutathione peroxidase, an enzyme that neutralizes free radicals before they damage cells. It also supports thyroid hormone conversion and immune function.
What You’ll Notice
Selenium deficiency alone is rare, but combined with low vitamin E it causes more severe symptoms: muscle weakness, poor coat, reduced immune response, and in severe cases white muscle disease (degeneration of skeletal and heart muscle). Reduced hair growth can be an early sign.
Sources & Notes
Fish, meat, eggs, Brazil nuts. Works synergistically with vitamin E — they protect each other. Toxicity is possible at high doses, so never supplement without veterinary guidance.
