What It Does
Regulates fluid balance, blood pressure, and nerve function. Sodium and chloride together maintain the right amount of water inside and outside cells. While essential, most pets get plenty of sodium from their diet — the concern is usually too much rather than too little.
What You’ll Notice
Excess sodium causes increased thirst, water retention, and in pets with heart or kidney disease, dangerous fluid buildup and high blood pressure. Deficiency is rare but can occur with prolonged vomiting or diarrhea, causing weakness and dehydration. Therapeutic diets for heart and kidney disease restrict sodium.
Sources & Notes
Table scraps and human food are the biggest source of excess sodium for pets. Pets with heart disease or kidney disease need sodium-restricted diets. Avoid salty treats, processed meats, and cheese.
