You spend time researching the best food for your pet, but if that food is stored improperly, it can lose nutritional value, become rancid, grow mold, or attract insects and rodents. Proper storage protects your investment and your pet's health. Most pet food problems are preventable with a few simple habits.
Dry Kibble Storage
Keep It in the Original Bag
This may be the most common mistake: pouring kibble into a plastic storage container and discarding the bag. The original bag is designed with a barrier layer that protects against light, air, and moisture penetration. The bag also contains the lot number and expiration date — information you need if there is a recall.
The best practice is to place the entire original bag inside a sealed container. This gives you both the protective bag and the airtight seal of the container. If your container is not large enough, fold the bag tightly and clip it shut, then store it in a cool, dry location.
Temperature and Location
- Store below 27°C (80°F). Heat accelerates fat oxidation (rancidity).
- Avoid garages, especially in summer — temperatures can exceed 40°C.
- Keep away from direct sunlight. UV light degrades vitamins and accelerates rancidity.
- Do not store near chemicals, cleaners, or strong-smelling substances. Kibble absorbs odors.
- Keep off the floor in areas prone to moisture or flooding.
How Long Does Kibble Last?
Unopened: follow the "best by" date (typically 12-18 months from manufacture). Opened: use within 4-6 weeks for optimal freshness. After 6 weeks, fat oxidation becomes significant even in well-stored kibble. Buy bag sizes your pet can finish within this timeframe — the biggest bag is not always the best value if it goes rancid before it is used.
Wet Food Storage
- Unopened cans: Store in a cool, dry place. Shelf life is typically 2-5 years.
- Opened cans: Cover tightly (use a silicone can lid or plastic wrap) and refrigerate immediately. Use within 3-5 days.
- Served food: Remove uneaten wet food from the bowl after 30 minutes at room temperature (20 minutes in hot weather). Bacteria multiply rapidly in moist, protein-rich environments.
- Do not: Leave opened cans unrefrigerated, microwave food in the can, or serve food straight from the fridge without warming slightly (cold food is less palatable).
Raw Food Storage
Raw pet food requires the same food safety handling as raw meat for humans:
- Keep frozen until ready to use. Thaw in the refrigerator, not on the counter.
- Thawed raw food lasts 2-3 days in the refrigerator.
- Serve portions at room temperature for palatability, but do not leave raw food in the bowl for more than 20 minutes.
- Clean bowls, surfaces, and utensils that contact raw food with hot soapy water after every use.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after handling raw pet food.
- Keep raw pet food separated from human food in the refrigerator and freezer.
Treat Storage
Soft, moist treats spoil faster than dry treats. Seal packages tightly after opening and store in a cool location. Freeze-dried treats are the most shelf-stable option. Homemade treats (baked biscuits, dehydrated meats) should be refrigerated and used within 1-2 weeks unless specifically designed for longer storage.
Signs of Spoiled Pet Food
- Rancid or unusual odor (stale, sour, or chemical smell)
- Visible mold or discoloration
- Changes in texture (soggy kibble, slimy wet food)
- Insects or larvae
- Your pet refuses food they normally eat eagerly
When in doubt, throw it out. Rancid fat not only tastes bad but contains free radicals that damage cells and may contain harmful compounds. Moldy food can contain mycotoxins that cause liver damage, vomiting, and neurological symptoms.
Simple rules: Keep the original bag, store it sealed in a cool dark place, use kibble within 6 weeks of opening, refrigerate opened wet food, and handle raw food like raw meat. These five habits protect both freshness and your pet's health.
